About Our Church

Our History

The history of the Lutheran people of Snyder dates back to the early 1800’s. St. John’s located at Snyder (known then as New Germany, because many of it’s inhabitants were from the Alsace and neighbouring districts of Germany) was built after several other churches were built in the area and was dedicated on January 19, 1868. St. John’s called their own pastor and held Christian services of worship in which the Gospel was preached, the Lord’s Supper was received, new children of God were baptized, and God was praised in hymns and prayer.

Today St. John’s continues this mission of bringing the Gospel to all people.

Our Faith

WE STILL BELIEVE, TEACH AND CONFESS …

  • The three universal and historic creeds of the Church, namely the Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds; we reject the errors that they reject.
  • The prophetic and apostolic Scriptures (the 66 books of the Bible) are the inspired (God breathed) and inerrant (without error) word of God and as such are authoritative and the only rule and norm for Christian faith and life. (2Tim. 3:16, Num 23:19, Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:8)
  • The doctrine of the most Holy Trinity is clearly taught in the Scripture. The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God. (Deut. 32:6, John 1:1-3, Gen. 2:7, Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds)
  • God created all things by His Word over six natural days (resting on the seventh); we reject the theory of evolution, theistic evolution, and every philosophy which seeks to give answer to the question of Creation outside and without the Triune God as Creator. (Gen. 1-11; Heb. 11:3; John 1:1-3; Col. 1:16)
  • Sin, death, and corruption entered the world because of Adam’s rebellion and sin; we reject therefore anything to the contrary, further we reject any godless philosophy that would call death good. (Rom. 5:12; Rom. 6:23)
  • God created mankind and ordered it in two distinct yet complimentary sexes, male and female; we reject any philosophy that seeks to blur and erase that which God made and ordered. (Gen. 5:2; I Cor 14:33)
  • God designed and ordered marriage to be the lifelong union of one man and one woman. (Mark 10:6-9; Eph 5:22-33) Thus, God declares not just homosexual lust and activity to be sin and contrary to the created order, but all forms of adultery. (Gen. 19:1-14; Rom. 1:24-32)
  • God orders family, church, and society through vocation; God provides specific qualifications for certain vocations. (1Tim 3; Titus 2; SC: Table of Duties)
  • People cannot be justified before God by their own strengths, merits, or works. We are all born spiritually dead, and therefore cannot play a role in our own salvation. (Rom 5:8, 10)
  • God’s grace is offered through Baptism, and children are to be baptized. In Baptism, a Christian finds their true and eternal identity. (Matt. 28:19; Rom. 6)
  • Jesus died for the sins of the world. (1 John 2:1-2)
  • Jesus physically rose from the dead and showed himself to the disciples. The tomb was empty on Easter morning. (Luke 24:2-5; I Cor. 15)
  • Jesus bestowed authority on His church on earth to forgive the sins of the repentant and to retain the sins of the unrepentant. (John 20:22-23)
  • Jesus is the only way to heaven. Those who die without faith in Him are lost in hell. (John 14:6, Rev. 20:14)
  • Jesus is truly and bodily present, in, with, and under natural bread and wine as His clear word states; we reject therefore any philosophy or notion that seeks to add or remove from Christ’s clear word. (Matt. 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:14-23; 1Cor. 10:16; 1 Cor. 11:23-26)
  • Abortion destroys human life. The living but preborn are persons in the sight of God from conception. Euthanasia and MAiD are in fact premeditated suicide (self-murder) and an act of ultimate rebellion against God, as He gave life, it is His to take away. (Luke 1:41-44, 1 John 3:15; Job 1:21)
  • As all authority is given from God a Christian is bound to honour the authority given; should authority command a Christian to sin, or violate their properly informed conscience, a Christian must always humbly obey God rather than men even should they be punished for doing so. (Ex 1:17; Daniel; Rom 13; Acts 5:29; 1 Peter 2:17)
  • That Mary is most blessed among women as the Scriptures declare, and that she is indeed Theotokos (the God bearer); we reject her immaculate conception, and any offices given to her that are rightly and solely those of her son and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Luke 1:42, 1 Tim. 2:5, Gal. 4:4-7)
  • That it is the faithful Confession of St Peter, that “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,” wrought by the Holy Spirit, upon which Christ Jesus builds His Church; thus, we reject the teaching that it is on the man and those claiming to be his successor on which Christ builds His Church. (Matt. 16:18; Mark 16:16; 1 Pet. 2:4-10)
  • That forgiveness is free and abundant for Christ’s sake to those who repent of their sins; we reject therefore any thought that forgiveness can be earned or purchased by our works. (1 John 1:9-10)
  • That God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth; we reject the false notion derived through flawed human reason, that God must necessarily and actively desire the condemnation of those not saved. (Eze. 33:11; 2 Pet. 3:9)

Our Worship

Our parish family gathers on Sunday mornings for the Divine Service and the Sacrament of the Altar. We also worship on the major Holy Days of the Church Year, and offer special mid-week services in Advent and Lent.  Our form of worship is the traditional Lutheran liturgy. In the services, Christ speaks to us in his Scriptures and offers us his true Body and Blood in the Sacrament of the Altar. We, in turn, respond with our own sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. The liturgy is the place where God applies to us the forgiveness of sins and the eternal life which Christ won for us on the Holy Cross. Our official worship book is the Lutheran Service Book (Concordia Publishing House), and our lesson series follows the Historical Lectionary of the Western Church.
